Alcohol, Wellbeing and the Role of Health Coaches
When: June 19, 2024 at 1PM PST
Speaker: Amy C. Willis, MA, HCA-RHC, CLC
Alcohol is a ubiquitous, addictive and socially encouraged substance that has become so normalized, we no longer question it. Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation in the world, both about alcohol’s inherent risks and harms as well as about addiction. In addition, the majority of adults of drinking age consume alcohol and in many cases, are doing so without having all the information to make an informed decision about those risks and harms.
Given the context of a readily available, addictive substance that is misunderstood in terms of immediate and long term impacts, the potential for folks to develop a problematic relationship with alcohol is high. With the vast amounts of confusing and muddled information about both alcohol and addiction, it can be challenging for health coaches to know how to adequately and effectively support their clients in this area. At the same time, health coaches are uniquely positioned to provide essential support when it comes to helping their clients change their habits, mindsets and relationships with alcohol. By attending this talk, you will walk away with:
Amy C. Willis (she/her) is the Holistic Sober Coach and founded HOL + WELL in 2019. After struggling with alcohol addiction for 15+ years and losing her dad to his alcohol addiction, Amy got sober in 2016. She supports women and folks within the LGBTQ+ community build better, booze-free lives they love. Amy is a dual-certificated coach, speaker, educator, consultant and writer. Amy works with clients globally both in 1-on-1 and group coaching programs and works with businesses and organizations to support them in creating an alcohol-safe workplace culture that prioritizes wellbeing and inclusion. Beyond work, Amy loves: traveling, hiking, reading, cold water dips, building community, movement, cross-stitch and doting on her geriatric cat, Captain. Amy's work is global but she currently resides in Kitchener, Ontario.

- Strategies for integrating discussion of toxicant exposures into your business in ways that are empowering, informative, and accessible (and that can mean the difference between clients taking action, or not)
- How sharing information about environmental toxicants can help differentiate your work, help you stand out, and attract more clients (and why pointing clients away from yourself and towards other social media accounts, blogs, or youtube isn’t the best way to educate on a topic as complex and nuanced as toxins)
- Why being able to “talk toxins” in a clear, confident, and concise way will improve client compliance around minimizing exposures, and in turn transform their results, and your business.

NEUROPLASTICITY AND BRAIN LONGEVITY
December 12, 2022 @ 11am PST
Lecturer: Aga Szmitkowska, Ph.D, Duration - 45 minutes, Q&A follows.
Neuroplasticity is a term used to describe a broad spectrum of neuronal activities encompassing multiple mechanisms involved in the changes that occur in the brain during one's life. These include the brain’s ability to modify, adapt, and change its structure and function as a response to life experiences. These changes are regulated by various neurotransmitters like glutamate, acetylcholine, epinephrine, and dopamine and their varying expression levels. Suboptimal expression of these transmitters may lead to cognitive decline as age progresses. There are many ways of improving neuroplasticity through activities for cognitive development. In this talk, you will find suggestions on how to incorporate those activities into your practice and prolong the healthy mental longevity of your clients.

HOW METABOLOMIC COMMUNICATIONS AFFECTS HEALTHY AGING? SENDING THE RIGHT SIGNALS
January 10, 2023 at 11:00 AM PST
Lecturer: Lahiri Kanth Nanduri Ph.D, Duration - 45 minutes, Q&A follows.
Communication is one of the most critical factors for the smooth functioning of many professional, personal, or even biological processes. In the case of biological processes, understanding the metabolic pathways and their mechanisms of signaling driving the process of many biological activities is crucial. This is also important to understand aging or age-related diseases, treat such diseases or even provide information for healthy aging.
Most of the current interventions, dietary, genetic, or pharmaceutical, targeting pathways considered to be longevity mediators are linked to metabolic signaling. In this talk, we will discuss some of these pathways and how they affect health and longevity which may be crucial for healthy aging or for addressing age-related diseases.

Many clients come to us with the goal of losing weight; especially after a few diet attempts failed. HPA Axis + Chronic Stress: Consequences, Adaptations and Integrative Holistic Approaches
Speaker: Marla Samuel, DNM, MSc Nutrition, BA, CNP, RNCP, DipHom, CFMP
PART 1: March 8, 2023 at 11am PST
PART 2: March 29, 2023 at 11am PST
Stress is a reality of being human. We are constantly adapting to new situations, like a global pandemic, or life changes that throw us off balance, such as the loss of a family member, divorce, a new baby., etc. However, we don’t often consider the long term effects of chronic stress which may have existed since childhood. These early developmental subtle energies penetrate the physiological, emotional, mental, and spiritual development of a human being and its effects are much more difficult to grasp. We do know stress takes a toll on the body in ways we are only beginning to understand.
In fact, some researchers claim 75-90% of today’s diseases in western society are related to stress mechanisms of the body.Aren’t we always adapting to something? As humans, is this exhaustive pace of maintaining homeostasis sustainable? It is the challenging task of the Nutritionist to create a treatment plan that addresses the clients overwhelm and imbalance. The question is, will the plan just address the residing physical body, or are there other factors at play, such as the shock-like wave effects of early life stress which may have shaped the current way in which one has developed their internalized and externalized adaptive responses?
Marla Samuel will discuss the many tools we have as Nutritionists to provide individualized support to help clients regain their well-being, on all levels. By utilizing our craft as food medicine healers, and empowering clients to create new nourishing food and lifestyle explorations, there is an opportunity to transform the maladaptive stress mechanisms, creating unlimited healing opportunities.
What you will Learn:

- Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itself
- You can diagnose your own biochemical profile
- Chronic diseases are not "druggable," but they are "foodable"
- Processed food isn’t just toxic, it’s addictive
- The war between vegan and keto is a false war—the combatants are on the same side
- Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side

Lecturer: Naftali Horowitz PHd, Harvard stem cell and regenerative biology department, duration - 45 minutes, Q&A follows.
While most somatic mutations accumulated with age bear no functional consequence, certain mutations, especially those in the hematopoietic system, may lead to an outgrowth of blood cells derived from a single, mutated, progenitor. This condition, usually referred to as clonal hematopoiesis is highly prevalent in elderly populations and can have various consequences ranging from blood cancers, to immune deficiencies. In this talk we will explore the molecular underpinnings of the process, its implications in health and longevity as well as current efforts to address and potentially treat the disorder.

TAKE GLYCANS TO HEART
When: November 10, 2022 at 11am PST
Lecturer: Dr. Marina Martinic Kavur, duration – 30 minutes, Q&A follows
In this lecture we will “Take glycans to heart“ and give you an insight into the importance of glycans for cardiovascular health. Ageing increases the risk of cardiovascular disease through a complex network of molecular events. However, that risk is not the same for all the chronological age contemporaries. Instead, it depends on a myriad of factors, including blood cholesterol, LDL, lifestyle choices, genetics, and medical history. Glycosylation affects cardiovascular health in multiple ways. Directly (e.g. in the case of congenital glycosylation disorders) or indirectly through altered glycan patterns on the cells of the blood vessels and immune cells, as well as alterations of glycosylation patterns associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. This lecture will introduce you to the effects of glycosylation on cardiometabolic disease mechanisms and then focus on the Immunoglobulin G glycans and the latest discoveries about their correlation with cardiovascular health.

February 10 - 11am PST - HEALTHY LONGEVITY APPROACH IN HEALTH COACHING
Speaker: Aga Szmitkowska, Phd, duration - 45 minutes, Q&A follows.
This lecture will explain how developing efficient health interventions, such as disease-prevention and health-promotion programs targeting ageing as a process and not only specific age-related conditions, might minimise the cost pressure related to population ageing. The worldwide demographic trend of increasing the proportion of elderly persons could likely explain the dramatic rise in interest of both the public and medical communities in biogerontology research. The engagement of ageing adults in wellness programs is still low. The reason for that might be a lack of programs designed mainly for older populations and managing more than one chronic disease. Therefore, identifying health program activities and delivery characteristics appealing to ageing adults, especially those with multiple chronic conditions, may help design more engaging programs. The artificial life extension is often accompanied by reduced or delayed morbidity. For example, dietary restriction was shown to extend the lifespan, slow the functional decline rate, and delay the prevalence of age-related chronic diseases in different model organisms and human studies. For instance, centenarians, particularly those residing in so-called 'Blue Zones,' have exceptional longevity and remain free from disabilities and chronic illness to very old age due to the healthy longevity approaches.

Speaker: Marla Samuel, DNM, MSc Nutrition, BA, CNP, RNCP, DipHom, CFMP (candidate)
In this lecture we will discuss:
1 CE Credit available by attending the live event

April 20 - 11am PST - HORMONES - THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE ALLY OF THE YOUTH
Lecturers: Dr Julija Juric and Dr Marina Martinic Kavur, duration – 30 minutes, Q&A follows
This tackling title brings up the latest findings on how hormones regulate Glycan Age, a biomarker of inflammation and biological ageing.
Hormones are signalling molecules that orchestrate and harmonise the function of all systems in our body keeping it in balance (homeostasis). There are many possible mechanisms by which hormones can trigger the action of different body systems. If we think about the immune system, more specifically about antibodies, recent research has put forward an interesting theory of hormones directing immune responses by changing the composition of glycan coating on IgG antibodies. Glycans are complex sugar molecules that fine-tune the inflammatory potential and the mode of action of our antibodies.
This lecture will provide you with the latest insights into the relationship between hormones and altered IgG glycosylation in various hormone-associated physiological states like pregnancy, menopause and menstrual cycle, as well as pathological conditions like Hashimoto disease, stress, obesity and diabetes. It will also cover ageing and age-related diseases as the final result of the sex hormone reduction during the lifetime with examples of how important hormones are for individual´s biological age measured by doing a simple GlycanAge test.

June 10 - 11am PST - TAKE GLYCANS TO HEART

HPA Axis + Chronic Stress: Consequences, Adaptations and Integrative Holistic Approaches with Marla Samuel
In fact, some researchers claim 75-90% of today’s diseases in western society are related to stress mechanisms of the body.
Aren’t we always adapting to something?

August 11, 2021 - 11am PST - The Resilience Factor: The Science of Building Stress-Tolerance with Josh Gitalis
There is an important marker of health that has been forgotten. It’s something that is not considered important anymore, because if it was, our whole health care system would operate in a different manner. It is resilience.
In the past 100 years, our living conditions have changed so much that we’ve removed the need to adapt. As a result, our resilience has plummeted. Most people are on the edge of crisis, waiting for that one thing – whether it be a stressful event, bacteria or virus, or chemical – to push them over the edge.
In this presentation, Josh outlines how resilience is measured, achieved, and optimized.
