Health Coach Alliance accreditation recognizes health coaching and health & nutrition programs that meet HCA's established educational standards for professional registration.
Accredited programs undergo a full review of their curriculum, instructional hours, hands-on training, student assessments and program materials. This gives schools independent professional recognition while giving qualifying graduates a defined pathway from education to an HCA professional designation.
HCA accreditation is earned through program review. Payment of the review fee does not guarantee approval.

Registered Health Coach™
For professional health coaching programs that provide comprehensive education in health coaching, behaviour change, lifestyle support and professional practice.
Minimum Education: 200 instructional hours plus a combined minimum of 30 hours of case-study work and/or client sessions.
HCA-RHNC™
Registered Health & Nutrition Counselor™
For advanced programs combining professional health coaching with comprehensive nutrition and functional-health education.
Minimum Education: 1,000 instructional hours, including the complete 200-hour HCA health coaching foundation plus a minimum of 800 additional hours of nutrition and functional-health education.
HCA-RCHC™
Registered Clinical Health Coach™
For health coaching programs designed for eligible regulated healthcare professionals who are adding professional health-coaching education to their existing clinical qualifications.
Minimum Education: 100 instructional hours of qualifying health-coach education plus an eligible regulated healthcare professional credential.

Programs seeking accreditation for the HCA-RHC™ pathway must provide a minimum of:
200 instructional hours of health coaching education

The program must include appropriate student assessment and a comprehensive final examination consisting of a minimum of 100 questions.

- Identifying barriers and triggers affecting health behaviours

Minimum Education
Programs seeking accreditation for the HCA-RHNC™ pathway must provide a minimum of:
1,000 instructional hours
This includes the complete 200-hour HCA-RHC™ health coaching curriculum plus a minimum of:
800 additional instructional hours of nutrition and functional-health education
Programs must also meet the hands-on training and assessment requirements established for the HCA-RHC™ pathway.

The program must meet all health coaching, hands-on application, scope, ethics and assessment requirements established for the HCA-RHC™ designation.

The curriculum must include:

- Digestion, absorption and nutrient utilization

- Whole-food nutrition

The HCA-RCHC™ pathway is intended for eligible regulated healthcare professionals who are adding professional health-coaching education to their existing clinical qualifications.
Minimum Education
Programs seeking accreditation for the HCA-RCHC™ pathway must provide a minimum of:
100 instructional hours of qualifying health-coach education
Students entering this pathway must also hold an eligible regulated healthcare professional credential in accordance with current HCA registration requirements.

Program & Instructor Review
HCA reviews more than curriculum titles and total instructional hours.
As part of the accreditation process, schools are required to provide information about the educational institution, program structure, founder qualifications, instructor qualifications, assessments and other program materials requested during review.
Instructors should have education, professional training and/or relevant experience appropriate to the subjects they are responsible for teaching.
HCA may request additional documentation or clarification where required to properly assess the program.
What HCA Reviews
When a program is submitted for HCA accreditation, the review considers the program as a whole.
Educational Hours
Does the program meet the minimum instructional and hands-on requirements for the HCA designation?
Curriculum Coverage
Does the curriculum adequately cover the required educational areas?
Hands-On Training
Are students required to apply what they learn through case studies, coaching practice, client work and/or other appropriate hands-on activities?
Student Assessment
Does the program evaluate student knowledge throughout the curriculum and include an appropriate final examination?
Instructor Qualifications
Do the qualifications and experience of the program's instructors appropriately support the subjects they teach?
Scope & Professional Standards
Does the program prepare graduates to understand professional scope, ethics, boundaries, collaboration and appropriate referral?
HCA accreditation is based on the complete program review. It is not granted solely on the basis of a school name, diploma or membership payment.
Is Your Program Ready for HCA Review?
Before applying, check that your program can meet the following requirements:
Your program meets the minimum instructional-hour requirement for the applicable HCA designation.
Your curriculum includes the required educational subject areas.
Your program includes the required case-study, hands-on and/or client work.
Students complete knowledge assessments throughout the program.
Students complete a comprehensive final examination.
Scope of practice, ethics and professional responsibilities are taught.
Your school can provide curriculum documentation and program access for HCA review.
Founder and instructor qualifications can be provided.
Strong Program, Missing a Requirement?
That does not necessarily mean your program cannot become HCA accredited.
If HCA identifies a required curriculum component that is missing during the review process, your school is given up to six months to make the required additions or revisions and submit the program for a second review at no additional review fee.
This gives schools with strong programs the opportunity to bring their curriculum into alignment with HCA educational standards without starting the application process again.
If a program does not meet the requirements for full accreditation, individual courses may still be eligible for consideration through HCA's Continuing Education approval process.
Important Information About HCA Professional Designations
HCA professional designations are awarded by the Health Coach Alliance as an independent professional organization.
HCA issues Registered and Licensed professional designations based on its own registration requirements and the designation terminology appropriate to the jurisdiction in which the member practises.
Where the use of “Registered” is restricted within a professional title, “Licensed” replaces “Registered” in the applicable HCA designation.
This allows members to use the HCA designation appropriate to their jurisdiction while maintaining recognition of the professional registration pathway and educational standard they have completed.
Members remain responsible for practising within their education, HCA Scope of Practice and the applicable requirements of the jurisdiction in which they practise.
Maintaining HCA Accreditation
HCA accreditation is maintained annually.
Accredited schools receive an annual review package and are responsible for advising HCA of relevant changes to their accredited program or curriculum.
Minor program updates are a normal part of maintaining current education. Where substantial changes are made to curriculum, educational hours, delivery, assessments or other accreditation requirements, HCA may determine that an additional program review is required.
This helps ensure that the program carrying HCA accreditation continues to meet the educational standards associated with that accreditation.
More Than One Professional Accreditation?
HCA accreditation can complement accreditation or approval from other professional organizations.
Different organizations provide different professional pathways, geographic reach, member resources and credentials. Schools may therefore choose to maintain accreditation with more than one professional organization where doing so supports their graduates.
HCA accreditation provides qualifying graduates with access to HCA's own professional registration and designation pathway, along with applicable HCA professional resources and benefits.
For schools serving students across Canada, the United States and internationally, this can provide graduates with additional professional options after completing their education.
Continuing Education Opportunities for Accredited Schools
HCA accreditation can extend beyond your school's primary program.
Accredited schools may submit eligible additional courses for HCA Continuing Education approval, giving HCA members opportunities to continue their professional development while creating another way for schools to remain connected with practitioners after graduation.
Qualifying programs submitted within six months of accreditation are currently eligible for a 50% reduction in the applicable Continuing Education course review fee.
