Along with providing diabetes education to patients, coaches encouraged self-management behaviours and acted as accountability partners. Some of the topics coaches discussed with patients included medication, foot care, weight concerns, blood glucose, and sleep.

Having a consistent source of support and encouragement inspirited participants to work through setbacks and get them back onto their desired track. Participants reported feeling increasingly confident in their abilities to deal with their diabetes, and experienced improved self-management and an increased sense of agency. They also appreciated the sense of community that coaches provide and having a supporter who understands the everyday challenges they face.

As a result, patients described various significant improvements in their lives due to having the assistance of a health coach. Some of the results include:

More consistent blood glucose monitoring

Healthier eating habits

Increased physical activity

Better stress management

Improved sleep practices

Positive change in attitude

Increased communication with physicians

Health coaches play a vital role in bridging the gap between medical care and everyday life. They empower individuals to take ownership of their health by offering personalized guidance, accountability, and support that extends beyond clinical settings. By promoting collaboration between patients and healthcare providers, health coaches not only enhance disease management but also contribute to improved quality of life and reduced healthcare strain. Their work is an essential complement to traditional care, especially for chronic conditions like diabetes, where consistent, compassionate guidance can make all the difference.

Check out the study here!

Lifestyle Coaching Versus Enhanced Pharmacotherapy for Blood Pressure Control in Black Adults with Persistent Uncontrolled Hypertension

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/lifestyle-coaching-versus-enhanced-pharmacotherapy-for-blood-pressure-control-in-black-adults-with-persistent-uncontrolled-hypertension

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/lifestyle-coaching-versus-enhanced-pharmacotherapy-for-blood-pressure-control-in-black-adults-with-persistent-uncontrolled-hypertension#comments

Blood Pressure Management

Health Coach Study

Hypertension

The Shake, Rattle, & Roll study completed by Nguyen-Huynh et al. The findings reveal that participants who received lifestyle coaching exhibited improved blood pressure control, and these outcomes persisted even up to 48 months post-intervention.

As discussed in this study, black adults in the US demonstrate a higher likelihood of experiencing cardiovascular disease and stroke compared to other ethnic groups. Therefore, it is crucial to identify strategies to reduce their risk of disease and achieve health outcomes that are more equitable with those of their white counterparts.

Given that black adults in the US are less likely to acquire satisfactory blood pressure (BP) control, the current study investigates various approaches that could lead to lasting satisfactory BP management. Participants were divided into three groups: those receiving a lifestyle coaching intervention (LC), individuals undergoing an enhanced pharmacotherapy monitoring protocol (EP), and a control group that received their usual care (UC).

The LC group participated in up to 16 individual telephone coaching sessions with a lifestyle coach, with at least half of the participants attending six or more sessions. Included in the lifestyle coaching were motivational interviewing techniques wherein participants constructed personal goals, determined potential barriers to achieving those goals, and received education and resources that promote healthy lifestyle behaviours. The preeminent goals of the LC intervention were to lower salt intake, as recommended in the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension Diet, and to increase agency in participants so that they could adopt positive lifestyle behaviours independently.

The UC group received free BP check visits, which included measuring participants’ BP with a cuff and conducting medication reviews. Correspondingly, the EP group received additional BP visits, conducted by a research nurse coordinator and a pharmacist, to “optimize thiazide diuretic dosing, and to increase prescribing of spironolactone for resistant hypertension”.

The researchers observed that the LC group displayed significant improvements in blood pressure control in comparison to the UC and EP groups. In particular, receiving telephone-based lifestyle interventions that were culturally aligned (integrating culturally-relevant photographs, stories, and recipes), the use of motivational interviewing, and the emphasis on maintaining a low-salt diet, all supported the implementation of independent health-promoting behaviours that lasted even as long as three years following the coaching sessions. These behaviours resulted in sustained BP control, whereas only participating in multiple blood pressure visits or obtaining enhanced pharmacotherapy did not.

Conclusively, the importance of lifestyle coaching, or health coaching, should not be understated. Health coaches serve as catalysts for sustainable change, particularly among populations at risk for chronic conditions like hypertension. The findings from the Shake, Rattle, & Roll study highlight that personalized lifestyle coaching not only fosters immediate improvements in health indicators—such as blood pressure—but also equips participants with the tools and knowledge necessary for long-term self-management.

This empowerment is especially vital for black adults, who may face systemic barriers to healthcare access and resources. By integrating culturally relevant content and motivational interviewing techniques into the coaching process, health coaches help individuals navigate their unique challenges and reinforce positive behavior change.

As demonstrated in this study, their role significantly enhances adherence to healthful practices, ultimately leading to healthier outcomes and improved quality of life. As healthcare systems evolve to focus more on personalized care approaches, the involvement of health coaches could become a cornerstone of effective chronic disease management, fostering both individual well-being and community health equity.

Source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35583869/

25 Holistic Health Trends for 2025

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/november-28th-2024

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/november-28th-2024#comments

Health Trends

As we step into 2025, the conversation around health and wellness continues to evolve in exciting and transformative ways. Consumers are taking their health—and the health of the planet—into their own hands like never before.

For health coaches, this is a golden opportunity to make a lasting impact. With more individuals looking to embrace a preventative lifestyle, staying informed on these trends will help you stay ahead of the curve, enrich your practice, and engage your audience—whether through client conversations, social media, or new offerings.

Let’s dive into the top 25 holistic health trends shaping 2025 and explore how you can align your work with these shifts to empower your clients and grow your practice.

1. Alcohol-Free Lifestyles and Sober Curiosity
A growing wave of sober curiosity is reshaping social norms around drinking, especially among millennials and Gen Z. Studies show that 49% of millennials and 60% of Gen Z respondents are actively looking to cut back on alcohol, citing mental health and wellness as their top motivations. As a result, alcohol-free lifestyles are becoming mainstream, with mocktails—creative, flavorful non-alcoholic drinks—taking center stage at bars, restaurants, and social events. These beverages allow individuals to engage in vibrant social experiences without compromising their mental clarity or physical health.

2. Functional Beverages: At the same time, functional beverages are becoming a booming category in holistic health. Infused with ingredients like probiotics for gut health, nootropics for focus, and adaptogens for stress relief, these drinks are marketed as a convenient way to support overall well-being. Together, these trends reflect a shift toward intentional consumption and a desire for drinks that not only taste great but also align with health and lifestyle goals. Whether enjoying a zero-proof cocktail or sipping on an adaptogen-rich elixir, consumers are redefining what it means to “raise a glass.”

3. Neurodivergence, Holistic Mental Health, & Stress Reduction
With increasing recognition of neurodiversity, mental health strategies are becoming more inclusive and holistic. Practices like mindfulness, nutrition, nature therapy, and personalized stress management techniques are gaining popularity. These approaches address the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals while promoting overall mental well-being.

4. Customized Gut Health
Innovations in gut health—like tailored probiotics and microbiome testing—are transforming how people approach digestion. A healthy gut is linked to immunity, mental health, and even skin health, making it a major focus for personalized care.

5. Personalized Nutrition
Advances in health technology are making personalized nutrition mainstream. By using tools like DNA testing and wearable devices, individuals can create tailored diets based on their unique needs, optimizing energy levels, digestion, and overall health. This approach ensures nutrition works with, not against, each person’s body.

6. Integrative, Team-Based Approaches to Wellness
Collaboration between different types of practitioners—like health coaches, holistic nutritionists, doctors, and therapists—is becoming the norm. This integrative model ensures clients receive comprehensive, well-rounded care for better patient outcomes.

7. Advocacy in Women’s Health
Women’s health is finally receiving some attention, with advancements in research, better support for HRT, endometriosis, menopause, fertility, postpartum care. Advocacy efforts are pushing for equity in healthcare, empowering women to demand better care and resources.

8. Equity & Inclusion in Healthcare
There’s a growing push for equitable healthcare access across socioeconomic and cultural lines. Holistic wellness is expanding to include marginalized communities, ensuring everyone has access to quality care and resources tailored to their needs.

9. Accessible Nutrition
With costs at an all-time high, affordable and nutritious meals are becoming a priority. People are returning to home cooking, embracing homesteading, and adopt zero-waste practices. Transparency around food expiration dates and storage is also gaining attention, helping to reduce food waste. This trend reflects a growing movement to make healthy eating attainable for everyone, regardless of budget or lifestyle.

10. Preventative Health vs. Curative Health
People are shifting from reactive healthcare to preventative practices, focusing on diet, exercise, regular checkups, and stress reduction to avoid illness before it occurs. This mindset represents a major cultural shift toward long-term wellness.

11. Satiety-Boosting Foods
With GLP-1 drugs making headlines for weight management, people are seeking natural ways to feel fuller longer. This trend highlights a desire to maintain healthy weight and energy levels through mindful, whole-food choices.

12. Reducing Inflammation
Chronic inflammation is at the root of many illnesses, driving interest in anti-inflammatory diets, supplements (like turmeric and omega-3s), and stress management. This trend reflects a proactive approach to preventing diseases and maintaining overall health.

13. Sexual & Reproductive Health
Open conversations and better resources around sexual and reproductive health are empowering individuals to take charge of this critical aspect of wellness. Topics like hormone balance, fertility, and menopause care are being approached holistically, integrating optimized nutrition, natural remedies and medical innovations.

14. Saunas as a Wellness Staple
Saunas are gaining traction as research confirms their benefits for cardiovascular health, neurological health, skin health, detoxification, and stress reduction. From infrared to traditional steam saunas, these heat therapies are becoming a go-to for relaxation and recovery, making them a key tool in holistic wellness.

15. Digital Detox
With screen time at an all-time high, more people are stepping away from devices to reconnect with nature and reduce mental fatigue. Digital detoxes help restore focus, improve sleep, and enhance overall well-being.

16. Sleep Hygiene
Good sleep is no longer seen as a luxury but a cornerstone of health. From creating bedtime routines to using tools like blackout curtains, sound machines, and sleep tracking devices, people are prioritizing restorative rest. Sleep hygiene is central to mental clarity, productivity, and emotional balance.

17. Clean, Non-Toxic Living
From household cleaners to cookware and containers, people are turning away from toxic chemicals and opting for cleaner, safer alternatives. This trend stems from increasing awareness of the potential health risks linked to long-term exposure to harmful substances in everyday products. Consumers are demanding transparency, seeking eco-friendly and non-toxic options to support their well-being and the planet.

18. Demands for Ingredient Transparency
Consumers are calling for full disclosure of ingredients in food, skincare, and household products. This transparency helps individuals make informed choices, avoid harmful substances, and support ethical brands.

19. Micro-Workouts
Micro-workouts are short, intense exercise sessions lasting 5-15 minutes, designed to fit into busy schedules. They’re popular because they deliver noticeable benefits, such as improved strength and cardiovascular health, in a fraction of the time. With more people seeking efficiency in their fitness routines, micro-workouts are a practical, accessible solution that removes barriers to staying active.

20. Grounding & Forest Bathing: Reconnecting with Nature
Wellness enthusiasts are turning to nature for holistic healing through practices like grounding and forest bathing. Grounding, or earthing, involves direct physical contact with the Earth’s surface—such as walking barefoot on grass or soil—to reduce inflammation, improve mood, and restore energy by harmonizing with nature’s natural electrical charge.

Similarly, forest bathing, inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, encourages intentional immersion in forest environments to reduce stress, boost immunity, and cultivate mental clarity. Together, these nature-based practices emphasize the importance of slowing down, disconnecting from technology, and reconnecting with the Earth to foster balance in both body and mind.

21. Wearable Technology
From fitness trackers to smart rings, wearable tech is empowering individuals to monitor everything from sleep to stress levels. These tools make it easier to stay accountable and informed about personal health.

22. Corporate Wellness
Businesses are investing more and more into employee wellness programs, recognizing that happy, healthy teams are more productive. Inclusion of mental health support, fitness challenges, health and lifestyle coaching and nutrition education contribute to healthier office environments.

23. Cellular Ageing & Longevity
Cellular aging is the process by which cells lose their ability to function optimally and repair damage over time, contributing to visible aging and age-related diseases. This decline is driven by factors like oxidative stress, inflammation, DNA damage, and the shortening of telomeres (the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes).

Advancements in longevity science and biohacking are offering promising ways to slow cellular aging. Mitochondrial health is a key focus, as these "powerhouses" of the cell play a central role in energy production and aging.

24. Homesteading
Once associated with rural life, homesteading has become a widespread trend driven by concerns over food security, environmental sustainability, and the desire for greater control over what we consume.

25. Social Wellness:
Social wellness is getting lots of attention as a critical factor in overall well-being. Social isolation and loneliness could be a greater cause of health decline that even smoking or obesity.

In our increasingly disconnected world, where work-from-home and hybrid models dominate and digital communication often replaces face-to-face interaction, loneliness has become a growing concern. To combat this, more individuals are seeking opportunities to build meaningful connections through group activities like fitness classes, meditation groups, and wellness clubs. These shared experiences help foster a sense of belonging, reduce isolation, and promote mental well-being.

By staying informed and embracing these shifts, you can empower your clients to lead healthier, more connected lives—while positioning yourself as a forward-thinking wellness professional. The path to well-being is evolving, and it’s an exciting time to be part of the journey.

Health Coaches in the Workplace

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/health-coaches-in-the-workplace

https://www.healthcoachalliance.ca/blog/health-coaches-in-the-workplace#comments

Health Coach Study

Workplace Wellbeing

Chronic diseases are a leading cause of death and illness around the globe. The German AtRisk study by Schaller et al. (2016) sheds light on how workplace health coaching can play a pivotal role in promoting well-being for individuals facing various chronic illnesses.

All participants, employees with health-related risk factors, received a behaviour-oriented lifestyle intervention. Some were assigned a health coach, of which education, coaching, and guidance were provided.

Results suggest that by combining behaviour-oriented lifestyle interventions with workplace adjustments, certified health coaches can help workers improve health literacy, self-efficacy, and overall quality of life.

Key findings include:

1. Health Coaching impact: Certified health coaches play a crucial role in providing personalized and sustainable health interventions by integrating behavior-oriented and workplace-related strategies. The study urges the professionalization of the field of health coaching, as educational qualifications are necessary to provide verifiable and well-informed guidance.

2. Health Literacy: Improving health literacy is essential for maintaining good health, and health coaches help bridge the gap between knowledge and practical application.

3. Cross-Provider Interventions: Multimodal approaches that combine ergonomic, behavioral, and workplace-related aspects are superior to single interventions. The needs of both the individual and the organizations must be considered for the most effective outcomes.

4. Public consultation is open until July 26, 2023.

Why This is Important?

The foundation of our regulatory system is stretched to the brink with massive backlogs in product applications – data used to establish this program is dramatically flawed.

The timing of implementing this program at the same time as new labelling requirements will financially decimate many companies in our industry, making it extremely challenging for them to stay viable.

These regulatory changes are unfair, unrealistic, and so costly they will force many small to medium-sized businesses to shut down

Canadian operations. All current NHP labelling requirements continue to apply, specifically what is required on the principal display panel (PDP) of a label.

Government did not take into account industry feedback on these changes, conduct user testing or consult labelling sciences to ensure the changes would result in a clearer, more consumer-friendly label. What they did create was a guidance document that is very technical and inflexible, making it hard for brands to comply.

The law is final as of June 21, 2022, and the regulations have been updated, however they are not enforced until June 21, 2025.

Why This is Important

Real estate for mandatory information will be limited – many brands will need to increase the size of their labels (and packaging) creating dramatic increases in the use of plastic, fuel, glue, wood and water. This has serious implications on our environmental footprint and will force brands to increase costs to accommodate for higher packaging costs.

Ingredient monographs, which will help inform the development of the Product Facts Tables, have still not been consulted on – this is putting considerable strain on meeting the June 2025 timeline.

When over-the-counter (OTC) products went through a similar change in 2017-2021, 1 out of 6 products left the Canadian market as a result of discontinuations or due to costs/regulatory complexities.

How else will these changes impact Canadian NHPs?

Increased Prices & Lack of AvailabilityMany brands you use will see dramatic price increases or stop existing in Canada altogether. 1/5 brands said they are seriously considering leaving Canada.

Decreased Product Choice

Complicated and unnecessary changes will force brands to evaluate their product line and drop products that are too expensive or unprofitable resulting in less variety. In a recent survey over 70% of brands said they would have to pull product from market if changes go through.

No Love for Local

Small, local businesses that cannot afford to navigate increasingly complex regulations and lengthy approval processes will be priced out of business. 83% of companies said it will be challenging to absorb the costs of these changes.

Nothing New

Exciting new products and international brands will likely not come to Canada because the regulatory burden will be too severe.

Environmental Burden

New regulations are increasing the amount of packaging (for the same amount of product), reduce recyclability, adversely impacting the environment.

Resources:

NHPPA Video with Shawn Buckley - Public and Practitioner Replay

!!!
